I miss Brownman Revival.
I miss going out on dates with Peter.
I miss dancing… with friends.
I miss getting tipsy…. or maybe even drunk.
I think the last time I got so high with happiness was back in February, during my birthday. Of course I celebrated it with my most favorite reggae band, Brownman Revival.
We used to attend their gigs all the time. That was when we were still living in Quezon City and when Xaymaca was still the reggae place to be on Friday nights. Unfortunately, Xaymaca closed down and all that’s left of the reggae scene is 70’s Bistro located along Anonas Blvd. in Quezon City. Brownman Revival usually plays there every Thursday from 10 pm to 2 am.
Brownman Revival at Kahit Saan Bar
Kahit Saan Bar located in Timog, Q.C.
There was this one time when a new bar, Kahit Saan Bar, opened somewhere near Timog on a Friday night and Peter and I were so happy to hear Brownman Revival play. How I wish it would always be like this!

That Friday night, we met their newest band member, Andrew, who replaced Jojo as the saxophone player. Andrew is quite cute and he’s only 19 years old. Teehee.
L-R: Andrew (sax player), Dennis (drummer), Me, Jotay (Manager) and Dino (vocalist)
L-R: The first two guys on the left are the bar owners, Dino, Me, Alphie (guitarist behind me) and Jao (bass guitarist)
Anyway, as luck would have it, the area is sort of residential so loud noises aren’t really allowed. After that one time, BMR went back to playing in 70’s Bistro every Thursday and doing their provincial gigs. Sigh.
Hanging out in Guijo St., Makati
Me and my cherry-flavored beer
The came last week. Peter and I met up with his friends and we all went to Guijo St. in Makati. On a Wednesday night, after I watched Love, Loss and What I Wore, I took a cab to Guijo street. While Peter was in a meeting, I was trying to get tipsy with SHIFT bar’s cherry-flavored beer. No luck. Hahaha! It was yummy though.
a rock band playing in Saguijo
Then on a Saturday night, I was able to check what Saguijo is all about. I only stayed inside for a few minutes coz my ears just couldn’t stand those loud rock noises. I guess I’m just not into rock. Oh how I wished Brownman Revival gets to play somewhere in Makati on a Friday or Saturday night too.
We stayed across Saguijo after that. There’s this bar called SHIFT and Carlos CastaƱo made me drink this yummy cocktail called Jackpot. It was buy two take one. I had two glasses of this Jack Daniel’s + coke concoction. It tasted quite strong and I was amazed at how I was handling the alcohol… Don’t you think so, Chen, June, HF, Rob and Colin? *wink!*
Unfortunately, I didn’t get drunk. But it was a happy evening for me. I learned a lot of “R-Rated” stuff from Peter’s friends (haha!) and I was just grateful for the time I spent bonding with them.
Brownman Revival at 70’s Bistro
Fast forward to last night… After giving up so many Thursdays because of work and my hectic schedule, I finally gave in. I promised Dennis (Brownman’s drummer) that we’d come, plus I just really miss them so much! I was so glad Charl could come with us too, even for just a little while.
Their songs always have a way of making my heart beat ten times faster, and making me happy deep down (no pun intended, haha!). I texted Dino (the vocalist) and told him that we’re coming. I was wishing that we’d be able to make it in time. Thank God they weren’t playing yet when we arrived. Yahoo! It was meant!
During the second set, Dino sang one of my favorite reggae versions of “First Cut is the Deepest”. I don’t know what’s with this song. Listening to the lyrics and understanding them can be very heartbreaking but for some reason its melody and rhythm just make me feel so alive… so in love… so inspired. Maybe I’ve gone crazy or maybe I’m just weird but that’s the way this song makes me feel… *mushy*
Dino also played some of their songs from their latest album, ETO PA. My most favorite of which is Hitik sa Bunga. The song is so upbeat and the lyrics are very socially relevant.
If you’d really listen to it, you’d think about those people who have crab mentality and can’t bear witnessing the successes of the people around them. Tsk, tsk. This song hopes to make us aware of that and invites us all to change this negativity. Anyway, what I loved most about this song is its beat. It’s so fun to sway with its music and just enjoy it.
Suffice it to say that I didn’t get drunk last night but I had tremendous fun. I’m crossing my fingers that I get to go next Thursday again and be with my boys. And hopefully get drunk this time? Or maybe alcohol doesn’t affect me anymore. We’ll see. Hahaha. ^_^
