The Expendables - a Movie Review

August 16, 2010

I rarely watch action flicks. However, from the moment I have seen the trailer for The Expendables, with all my favorite top notch action movie stars that I grew up with (Sylvester Stallone for Rambo, Arnold Schwarzenegger for Commando, Bruce Willis for Die Hard and Jet Li for One), my interest was already piqued. Add to that the fact that Jason Statham, Mickey Rourke, Randy Couture, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Steve Austin and Eric Roberts  were also included in the lineup, I said to myself  “Oh my God! This is going to be THE action flick of the century!

And true enough, it was! From start to finish, Expendables gave me the kind of raw, action combats and sequences that I have never seen before. Okay, there were times it felt like I was watching 300 with all those blood being spilt but without feeling like the scenes were adulterated with computer graphics.

Every scene felt pure and genuine, the kind of scenes that are truly for real men. Like my husband Peter, and our friend Brian said “Ito ang pelikula para sa mga tunany na lalake.” (”This is the movie for real men.”) Even in Mickey Rourke’s crying scene, it really captured the essence of what being a real man is all about.

Sylvester Stallone really did an awesome job directing and producing this movie. I particularly loved that scene when the fire reflected in his eyes. It was truly a moment that captured the heart of the film — pure burning passion for action.

I think what captured a lot of people’s attention (and women’s hearts like mine) to this movie is its old-fashioned style. Remember, we Filipinos grew up with that kind of “bakbakan and barilan” (fight and gun scenes) without much computer graphics added to it. It was pure testosterone and adrenaline-filled sequences which showcased an ensemble cast so hard to beat. I read a comment somewhere that the only actor missing in this film was Chuck Norris. LOL!

It is no wonder then that The Expendables ruled the top  this weekend in US and Canada, earning a whopping $35 million for Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.

Bravo Syslvester Stallone! You have truly given what the audience needs in a real action flick — guns, macho men and things blowing up. Till your next amazing movie, I hope!

Here’s the trailer for The Expendables if you haven’t seen it yet:

I Love Venetian Masks

August 8, 2010

Have you ever attended a masquerade ball? If so, what kind of mask did you wear? I have yet to attend one and if invited, I would like to wear one of those fabulous Venetian Masks. The practice of wearing these stylish and elegant masks actually started when Venetians went to the streets in 1162, wearing their finest costumes, singing and dancing for joy, to celebrate their victory in the battle against Ulrico. This soon became a tradition and has now been practiced for almost a millennium.

A particular kind of mask that I’d like to wear someday is one of those fabulous Venetian Animal Masks like either a cat or a lion. When I get to visit Venice someday, I’ll do it on my birthday month because every February, Venice becomes one live, glorious party place! Tourists get to experience the delightful parade of Venetians in their gondolas wearing gold, brocade, silk, feather costumes and a wide array of colorful Venetian Masks. The canals of Venice look magnificent at night as torches display shadow and light reflected on the canal’s water. Music plays non-stop as if being transported back in time. What a really joyous occasion!

Maybe I’ll have a masquerade party come Halloween season and I’ll get one of those  Venetian Animal Masks I want. I can’t wait!
