Feb. 18, 2010: Golden Jubilee Celebration of Lopez Museum Kicks Off

February 8, 2010

Did you know that Lopez Memorial Museum and Library, which started out as just a mere personal collection of the late Eugenio Lopez, Sr. is now regarded as the finest museum in Asia? It has definitely risen above the ranks and is now considered as a credible and honorable institution in the Philippines.

The museum was founded 1960, with only the 36 Juan Luna and 182 Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo masterpieces and now has over 19,000 Filipiniana titles by 12,000 authors, maps, rare books, , literary works and manuscripts. They’ve also made sure that these wonderful works are preserved for the use of the future generations through their digitization project and conservation laboratory.

Through the years, Lopez Museum has always been committed to move the institution forward by broadening its commitments outside its physical structure, as well as pursuing an interdisciplinary approach to its exhibitions and programs.

On my birthday, Lopez Museum celebrates 50th anniversary on February 18. On the same day, anniversary activities will kick off  with the Unfolding book launch and opening of Threads exhibit. As they launch their coffee table book, “Unfolding Half a Century: The Lopez Memorial Museum”, they will also open an avant-garde exhibit, Threads: The Museum as Site for the Weaving of Tales.

The exhibit will present several contemporary artists. To wit: Leo Abaya, Myra Beltran, Jef Carnay, Kiri Dalena, Ann Pamintuan, Jean Marie Syjuco and Ann Wizer. Each of them will either create an art taken from their personal inception and design of the museum or to do cosplay characters of the symbolic works found in the museum’s collections. All of these will be for the purpose of showcasing what museums really do which are — to serve as places of memory and recollection as well as chronological story-telling. Watch out for these main features from February 19-25, 2010 to be exhibited at the Rockwell Power Plant Mall North Court.

Alongside these highlights will be the public opening of the 50th anniversary exhibition of Lopez Museum at the premises in Ortigas Center, Pasig. The exhibition, After the Fact, arouses memory of past exhibitions and serves as a sneak peek of Lopez Museum’s forthcoming plan of action. It will present key works by Gaston Damag, Antipas Delotavo, Imelda Cajipe-Endaya and Keith Sicat, also included in the museum’s collection.

The institution has always been dedicated to moving forward by expanding its commitment outside the borders of its physical architecture. Moreover, they are currently pursuing an interdisciplinary approach to its exhibitions and programs. It will also launch a new website for the  Lopez Musem, www.lopez-museum.org where visitors would be able to access their archives of around 100,000 images. That is a lot! Kudos to Lopez Museum!

To be part of their celebration, visit the Lopez Museum and Library Facebook page for more information.

Here are the highlighted events to kick off their anniversary:
