My Fun Plan Amidst the Global Crisis

February 9, 2009

Lately, I’ve been in the habit of conversing with myself. No, I’m not going crazy. Hehehe. On the contrary, I’ve been doing some mental processing regarding the current global economic situation. This is what my “inner voice” has been whispering to me lately:

What’s the plan, Jen? It looks like your happy days are about to be over. The global economic crisis is finally catching up and you won’t get to play the role of the perfect  little housewife anymore which you are tremendously enjoying right now. You need to get a stable job while at the same time trying not to sacrifice your own happiness in the process.

I completely understand. After all, I do miss being out there, meeting all kinds of people, doing a great job serving my superiors and helping colleagues. So guess what I did?

I started submitting my resume once again and I already got a couple of responses and schedules for interviews and exams. I feel quite excited about them! But at the same time, I didn’t realize that all these companies I applied at would be answering so fast. Some of them even wanted me to start ASAP. As much as it breaks my heart, my plate is full at the moment doing some freelance work that I’ve already committed myself to do. And the soonest I can really go back to the work force full time would be on April 4. So I guess, I have to stop applying right now, finish my current work commitments and just focus on the interviews that have already been scheduled. Hopefully, if they want to hire me, they’d allow me to start on the said date. So, just to make sure that I do everything right, and make the most out of my current situation before I once again delve into a full time office position either here or abroad (I’m crossing my fingers on Bahrain & Dubai where my cousin promised to help get me a visa and a job), here’s my action plan: 1.  Stop applications for now and start aggressively applying again on April 4, 2009;  2.  Do my best on those job interviews that were already scheduled; 3. In the event that I get to spare a few hours every day doing something else, consider studying / reviewing the following:

Relevant MDP learning
Ebook on Honest Riches
Modules on Basic French
Book on Driving Basics
Enroll in the following courses:
  Driving
  Scuba Diving
  Swimming

Despite the growing fear brought about by the current financial global crisis, it still is important to find balance and happiness in leisure. It won’t help to feel scared and gloomy all the time. Did you know that it takes just about the same amount of energy to feel happy or sad? And since energy produces waves or some sort of vibration,  this energy will somehow find its way to be traveling at the same frequency. So when you’re feeling blue, you attract more negative things. But when you’re happy, you attract more of the good stuff. So which would you prefer? You spend the same amount of energy anyway. So why bother with negativity? I’d rather be hopeful, excited and happy instead! And in terms of leisure, I just need to be conservative with expenses while at the same time enjoying myself. So here’s my schedule so far as well as some money saving tips we can use:

Feb. 7, 2009 – meet up with friends
- Have Dinner with a girlfriend… look for a resto in Shangrila Mall that’s not too expensive.  – DONE!

Our gf Ella just recently came back from Qatar. She’s a graphic web designer and is currently on vacation. It was so nice to see her after a looong time! The way we talked, I practically poured my heart out to her. I think the last time we were together was when we went to Lago de Oro to go knee boarding! That was February  last year!It has been that long. Anyway, it was so sweet of her to bring us pasalubong — 2 HUGE portraits of me and Peter. She’s such a sweet and thoughtful gal. Love yah, Ella! Let’s go surfing soon!

- Attend Ninette’s Birthday dinner celebration. It’s her birthday so it’s her treat. DONE!

L-R: Anmarie, Ninette (the birthday gal), Me & Ces. Another fun night of drinking & dancing at Embassy Cuisine.

Feb. 11, 2009 – Talk to Panoly Boracay people and ask if we can carry over this year the annual levy payment and points we had for last year which we were not  able to use so we won’t have to pay anything anymore for our 7days/6nights stay in Panoly Boracay on March 28-April 3. – DONE! YAY!

Feb. 12, 2009 - Attend a free seminar with a girlfriend re: Life, Love & Legacy. She will treat me to dinner/drinks afterwards.

Feb. 14 to 15, 2009 – Valentine Weekend Celeb:
- Clark’s Hot Air Balloon Event – entrance fee is to be announced. I’m guessing it’s not that expensive since we already went there year 2006 and had loads of fun!

These photos were taken Februray 2006. I heard this year’s hot air balloon fair will be so much bigger and grander! I can’t wait to come see it again!

- Bring our own food & bottled water (stored in an ice cooler) to save on food expenses.
- Arm ourselves with our Nikon D40 & Sony handy cam to get the most out of this affair.
- Bring Peter’s kite so he can play with it once again.
- Bring some food & drinks we have stored at home: Peter’s Pita Sandwiches, Peter’s pasta dishes if possible, wine for me and cola for Peter.
- Watch old movies (
ike Casablanca, Gone With The Wind, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, West Side Story, Annie & Titanic) at home over some beer/wine/pulutan.

Feb. 18, 2009 – Celebrate my 31st birthday quietly at home over a romantic, candlelit dinner.

If before, I was so used to celebrating my birthday with a bang, with lotsa friends around, or with a spontaneous trip to Baguio just because it was the Flower Festival & Brownman Revival was there,  or with a birthday pancake in some remote island with my family, this year, I just want it celebrated with my hubby at home. ^_^  Or maybe because I wann be forever 30! Hahaha!

Feb. 20, 2009 – Meet up with gfs at the Fort. I’ll be sure to bring my BDJ coupons to score some free coffee.

Feb. 21 to 22, 2009 – My BIRTHDAY day celeb itinerary
- Les Caraibes Beach Resort (Batangas) Overnight Camping: Pitch our own tent.

I know how to pitch my tent with style!!!

- Tent Overnight fee is 500 + 150 entrance fee per head
- Bring our own inflatable boat & snorkeling gear.
- Bring own sandwiches and drinks.
- Head to Tagaytay the next day to check out what’s new.
- Control shopping to a minimum or no shopping at all.
- Buy fresh fruits & veggies.

March 7-8, 2009
– Surfing Trip to La Union

Can’t wait to surf again!!!

- Check out cheaper accommodations. Those that allow pitching of own tents with clean, communal shower and bathrooms are best.
- Better yet, ask our friends if they want to come with us so we can all share  the gas & room expenses.
- Bring own food and ice bucket with lots of ice for juice drinks.

March 14 to 15, 2009
– Prepare for my Jakarta & Bali Trip

March 20 to 26, 2009
– Trip to Jakarta & Bali
- Flights have already been paid for.
- Php5000 for RT flights Jakarta-Bali-Jakarta (Lora will take care of it. I can pay her later on.)
- Free accommodations in Jakarta (c/o Lora)
- Php5000 for 3 nights stay in Bali
- Php10,000 is more than enough allowance for food & other stuff.
March 28 to April 3, 2009 – Trip to Boracay
- Flights & accommodations have already been paid for.
- Php10,000 allowance is more than enough allowance for food & other stuff.

Okay, so that’s the plan. And I say it’s a good one considering that this is probably not the right time to “splurge”. On the other hand, I am not really splurging. I am just making the most of my time, resources and the money that I’ve already invested in some of these trips a long time ago. Besides, I’ve been sequestered at home for more than a month now, playing the perfect housewife (which I do love by the way). We’ve also done our share of cutting expenses at home like: a.  eating healthier food (veggies are a lot less expensive than meat); b. lesser night outs unless it’s someone else’s treat (like friends’ birthdays & sponsored events); c. letting go of our helper (which came at the right time); d. giving up one of our two smart bro connections; e. making sure all  plugs of appliances are taken out of the socket when not in use (we’ve saved 30% electricity expenses since we did that!); f. using fan instead of aircon since the weather has been kind of cool lately; g. recycling old clothes, footwear & acessories by mixing and matching them to produce cool outfits.

Moreover, regarding some of the trips, like whether I go to Jakarta, Bali & Boracay or not for instance, the fees & fares have already been paid for in advance. There’s no way I can refund them now so I might as well just use and enjoy them.  As for the others, as long as I follow my own money saving tips, whatever extra I spend for them will definitely be worth it. Besides, even in these hard times, there will always be opportunities. I just have to remind myself the importance of feeling good so good things will keep on coming. It’s one of the most basic laws. We just have to have faith! Ciao for now!

Lately, I too, have been asking the same questions myself. Reality checks have been more frequent than usual with the current state of economic elements. I’m happy that despite all these turmoil you still find yourself having a good time (and will be having good times ahead). There’s absolutely nothing wrong with treating yourself right especially if you deserve to be happy. I admire you guys for being resilient to the harsh realities of 2009. Good luck to all of your endeavors and I hope things will work out well come April 4. :)

Thanks Wits! Peter told me just last night — “Technically, we are not out of jobs. We are simply realigning our careers.” That’s really a nice way to put it, isn’t it? We both wish you well too. You’ve always been the responsible and sensible type. You will definitely go a long way. And 2009 may just be a little bump on the road for all of us. ;-)

WE NEVER GOT TO GO TO LA UNION. Is March 7-8 final final? Cos I’d love to get out of the city and we could stay at the La Union house!
