Caught Off Guard

February 3, 2008

Have you ever gone though a day when you were just minding your own business, enjoying the things you normally do, finally living that carefree life you’ve always been craving for (read: with lots of money and free time to do whatever you want)  while suddenly an opportunity comes along and makes you think twice, or even thrice, if you won’t at least give it a try? You’ve already been doing it for so long anyway. Perhaps, given another avenue, you can hack it! You might just end up happier and more fulfilled (if that’s still possible for someone who’s already happy and content).  I know I’m being a little bit vague here. Okay, okay. Perky and VERY vague. Well, are you interested to know about what really happened? I’m feeling a bit queasy here. But I have to tell you. The blogger in me needs to let it all out!

Ok, so there we were cruisng along the South Super Highway,  bringing our dog, Sam, to her vet this afternoon, when all of a sudden, our friend John called up, asking us to go to the Philippine Daily Inquirer. I asked, "What for?" It turned out, they are in need of writers for the SUPER section of PDI. I’ve heard of this before from a new friend I met in Bora during the Funboard Cup and off the top of my head, I assumed it’s something like 2BU in the Lifestyle section of the said publication.  And I thought, why not? I’m hip, I’m cultured, I’m cutting-edge. I get to do things most people my age only wish for — I travel, I party in the most happening places. I get to lounge around the house all day, just reading or watching DVDs or spending countless hours online. I do watersports, I surf and I kayak and I’m learning to wakeboard too. I’m also a bit of a gadget freak and I’m a self confessed shopaholic. So yeah, I’d say I’m fairly well rounded. Plus, bagging the 2006 People’s Choice Awards for Blogs Category in the 9th Philippine Web Awards, should be something worth considering, right? So off I went.

Little did I know that it was going to be THE most nerve-wracking moment of my life so far. For one, it’s been ages since I got interviewd, and by a panel at that! Having worked with the human resources department of my last company for almost six years, I’ve always done the interviewing and scrutinizing of applicants. But now, the tables have turned! I was totally unprepared. I only came with my confidence and a bit of what I know about Super. Heck, it was a very spontaneous thing that I did and John really did some hardselling back there when he was still convincing me to go!

For the most part, I’ve already forgotten what the questions were and how I answered them. I just know that it wasn’t my best. I could’ve done better. Like for instance, when asked to describe myself, I should’ve told them in a more laconic manner : "I’m a blogger. I live, sleep and breathe blogging."  And when they ask me to expound on that, then that’s when I tell them in detail how I spend my time these days including all the other recent developments in my life. Oh well. I’m just happy that I still went through with it, butterflies and all. It was one great experience, something to look back to when I’m facing another interviewer in the future, or even another applicant if I do decide to go back to recruitment. Plus, I got to meet Pam Pastor, the lady who interviewed me about my spa products 5 years ago and she still remembers! And the big bonus of all was that I got to talk to my crush! I’ll tell you more about him in my next post. He actually urged me to finish my Funboard Cup entries. Ok, Wango, your wish is my command. Oops! That’s him! :-)
