SUKOB mga kapatid!

July 29, 2006

seldom if not rarely watch Pinoy flicks. Blame it on the influence of Western culture or simply blame it on our lack of quality Pinoy Films. They really can’t force us, especially the middle and upper class, to patronize their own. UNLESS, they come up with something visually, intellectually and emotionally stimulating that will make Pinoys (across the board) spend their hard-earned peso in exchange for 2 hours worth of enjoyable moving pictures.

Well? Well, THAT is the case with SUKOB — a Pinoy thriller flick starring Philippines’ Drama Princess Claudine Barreto and Game Show Diva Kris Aquino.  Sukob is one of our superstitious beliefs as Filipinos. It is said among the elderly that no relatives must be wed in the same year or incase of death in the family, no weddings can be done until after a year has passed. Lest you suffer an extreme curse and be included in the circle of severe misfortune that has been around for decades and centuries, as evidenced by deaths and missing bodies. This misfortune can only be broken through certain sacrifices that can be as black as the curse itself. Oohhhh, que horror!!! Why am I featuring it in my blog?  I’ll give you three reasons:

1) Thriller movies tend to be  cliche-ish most of the time.  You always know what will happen and you tend to anticipate when to scream next. This aint the case with Sukob. You think you know what’s happening, how the movie was edited, what storyline was used, only to find out towards the end how far you are from the truth. Here, horror comes when you least expect it! The audience (myself included) was screaming in fear almost every other frame of the movie! I ended up having a sore throat afterwards, “much to my satisfaction”.

2) Choices of characters was carefully done. Claudine and Kris portrayed theirs well and the director definitely knew who to pair them up with. In terms of subplots, there were several of them. There’s an underlying love story, coupled with deception and lies. There was an element of comedy and drama was intertwined. It’s a complete mixture of the right ingredients, thus amking this one great horror film.

3) The plot has certain twists and turns that will leave you baffled even after you were long gone from the theater. It will haunt you even after several days have passed. You might even have certain nightmares not related to it (I did! Just last night!). That’s how affected I was with this movie.

And so, FOR ME, Sukob is  THE NO. 1 movie  this year, hands down! It has topped Shyamalan’s Lady in the Water (2nd place in my list), Superman (3rd placer), X-Men (4th placer), and Da Vinci Code (5th placer). I’m not telling you to watch it. That is entirely up to you. Lest…
